Gambade! is a very successful project to develop a community of Viola da Gamba players in St. John’s by lending instruments to interested musicians of all ages and teaching them to play. Christina Smith formed the group in late 2016 with the aid of a community music grant from Arts NL, and support from the Viola da Gamba Society of the Americas and the Suzuki Talent Education Program of St. John’s. Gambade! consists of ten musicians who play Renaissance Music on viols of different sizes, in groups of anywhere from 3-7 members, called “consorts.” The trio appearing at Cape St. Mary’s will be the senior members of the group, the “X-Viols” Francesca Swann (bass viol), and Christina Smith (tenor viol), and Jean Hewson (recorders). They will perform music by Thomas Morley, William Byrd, Giovanni Coprario and other composers from about the time of Shakespeare.
